Active recall and spaced review: check what you can explain

On this page

Rereading can make a page feel familiar without showing what you can use independently. Build a study session around recalling an idea, checking it and returning to it after a gap.

Turn an explanation into a retrieval task

After a short section, close the material and answer a specific question from memory. For a queue, describe which item leaves next and why. A blank page or a tiny example exposes gaps that highlighting alone can hide. The goal is useful information about your understanding, not a perfect performance on the first attempt.

Check the answer and repair the gap

Compare your explanation with a reliable reference or a worked solution. Identify the exact step that was missing, then try a similar question rather than copying the answer repeatedly. Feedback matters because an unchecked confident mistake can become easier to repeat. Separate a misunderstanding of the concept from a simple calculation slip.

Return after a meaningful interval

Space opportunities to retrieve the idea instead of placing every repetition in one sitting. There is no single schedule that suits every learner and topic. Start with a manageable return point, observe what you remember and adjust. Mix related examples when you can explain the basic differences, so choosing the method becomes part of the task.

Worked example

A twenty-minute practice block might contain five minutes studying a small example, five minutes explaining it without notes, five minutes checking and correcting, and five minutes trying a new input. On another day, begin with the same recall question before opening the explanation.

Check your understanding

Try each question before opening its explanation. These are free practice prompts; they do not use game chances.

Does a difficult recall attempt mean the session failed?

Not necessarily. It may reveal a gap while there is still time to fix it. Use accurate feedback and a manageable question; repeated confusion without instruction is not the goal.

Is there one proven review interval for every topic?

No. Suitable spacing depends on the material, the learner and when the knowledge will be needed. Treat a schedule as something to adjust using recall results.

How could you practise binary search without rereading the guide?

Draw a sorted seven-item array, choose a target and record each midpoint and remaining interval from memory. Then compare the trace with a worked solution and explain any discarded half.
